A leader's intelligence has to have a strong emotional component. He has to have high levels of self-awareness, maturity and self-control....
No doubt emotional intelligence is more rare than book smarts, but my experience says it is actually more important in the making of a leader.
You just can't ignore it.
 Jack Welch

Have you ever wondered why there are highly intelligent people who we thought are most likely to succeed but did not? Have you encountered intellectually superior or technically brilliant individuals who have difficulty leading others or working in a team?

What do they lack that people of average intelligence possess and therefore make the latter perform better and become highly successful in their professional and personal lives? The answer is in their level of Emotional Intelligence (EI) or what is commonly known as EQ (Emotional Quotient).

Today, psychologists generally agree that among the ingredients for success, IQ (Intelligence Quotient) only counts for roughly 10% (25% at best); the rest depends on everything else – including EQ. Research has also found that individuals with strong leadership potential tend to be more emotionally intelligent. This suggests that a high EQ is an important quality for business leaders and managers to have.

Thus, many companies worldwide now mandate EQ training and utilize EQ tests as part of their hiring process. Organizations which have adopted EQ early by working to increase the EQ competency of their workforce have reaped tremendous benefits.

A study of 44 Fortune 500 companies have found that salespeople with high EQ produced twice the revenue of those with average or below average scores. In another study, technical programmers with high emotional intelligence competency were developing software three times faster than those with lower competency. A large hospital, on the other hand, were able to reduce their critical care nursing turnover from 65 percent to 15 percent within 18 months of implementing an emotional intelligence screening assessment.
